Toronto and Ottawa Police : a long history of racist profiling

Brampton police were searching for a suspect who was black, in his 20s, and 5-foot-6.
The profiling victim, Mr. Williams, who was 20 in 1971, is 6 feet tall, taking his medicaly prescribed daily walk.

In 2007, the Ontario Human Rights Commission ruled that former Peel police officer Richard Elkington racially profiled a suspected shoplifter. The police force was ordered to pay $20,000 in damages.

In Ottawa 2004, restaurant owner and every black patron and employee were cuffed and under suspicion when "a black guy with a gun" was reported to be roaming the street.

As usual, the "internal investigation" found no wrong doing (sound familiar?). The restaurant owner went to court, and Ottawa Police paid 4 lawyers for 6 years to fight, stall, delay the case in every manner possible. The Ottawa Police have yet to apoligize.

Now they came up with a "racial profiling policy", while stating there is "no issue with race" in Ottawa Police in the same breath.

Cleopatra -- queen of denial?

The policy has no teeth, and no punishment is prescribed for violators. It is more a P.R. exercise than anything.

Recall there are several video footage of suspects and known innocent citizens, most of whom are not white, being beat up while in police custody. All internal investigations yielded "no wrong doing".

Yet several charges have been dropped.

Finally, last month, 2 black kids driving in mom's caddy got off when the judge noted their "routine stop" for "driving while black" sounded like "racial profiling". I wonder how many limos are stopped to look for call girls and coccaine.

How many more human rights violations will be required before real change is implemented in Police Brutality behaviour?

In other news, a Muslim American arranged to have an "honour killing" for his wife, and then told police "3 black men" did it. http://mobile.nytimes.com/article;jsessionid=B6200B35557D7381C9DDA6BAFBBEE654.w6?a=830741&f=22 Two children lost their mother. And three non-existant black men are going to be the go-to suspects in other cases. (Remember Susan Smith who drowned her babies then claimed a black man kidnapped her kids?)

After your ill-considered past expressions of support for Sherrif Arpaio down in Arizona (apparently down the memory hole) who did this kind of stuff and much, much worse shall we consider this a road to Damascus moment? Seriously though, good post.
