Kids Up Front

Things That are Less White than Ontario Premier Doug Ford's Cabinet

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s brother, a former drug pusher, has cultivated his white male privilege all the way to the highest office in Ontario. Canada's most populous province has a new premier, and he spends more time telling us he is for the people than doing actions for the people.

The first people he picked to represent "the people" he professes to champion do not reflect the diversity of the "most diverse" province or the "most multicultural" city he hails from.

Despite having numerous experienced and qualified elected MPPs of colour to chose from, Premier Fraud selected a roster of white people to lead “the people” out of former Premier Kathleen Wynne’s shadow.

There are a few things that are less white than Doug Ford's cabinet:
  1. an iceberg
  2. the snow that blanketed Newfoundland last week
  3. Megan Markle's wedding dress
  4. U.S. President Donald Trump's cabinet
  5. moldy, spoiled milk
  6. Argentina's 2018 FIFA World Cup roster
  7. the crowd of people bidding to buy a black man's body in the movie "Get Out"
  8. an episode of "F.R.I.E.N.D.s"
  9. an episode of "Seinfeld"
  10. the teeth of the low-income kids Doug invites to his cottage in the summer for a feel-good photo-op
  11. the rice underprivileged Ontarians will be eating because they can't afford anything else
  12. the crack-cocaine Rob Ford was videotaped snorting
  13. the toilet paper that will be needed to clean up after the pending sh*t storm

How do you solve a problem like Maryam Monsef?

Maryam Monsef's "Cinderella story", from refugee to Canadian Member of Parliament, is the kind of mythical fairytale that reinforces Canadians' belief their nation is not only welcoming to immigrants, but offers them equal opportunity to ascend to the highest offices of the land.

Even U.S. President Obama made reference to it when he made a stop in the House of Commons last summer.

" Like the girl who fled Afghanistan by donkey and camel and jet plane, and who remembers being greeted in this country by helping hands and the sound of robins singing. And today, she serves in this chamber [...] because Canada is her home."
- President Obama in Ottawa

After reporters revealed the mismatch between Minister Monsef's stated and actual birthplaces, a politically-motivated 'outrage' ensued. Did she purposely mislead her colleagues, her constituents? Was she a fraud? Could her Canadian citizenship be revoked?

The first ever Afghan-born Minister went on a media tour to explain herself smooth things over with the Canadian public. The public relations exercise aimed to deflect blame to one particular family member who allegedly made the innocuous 'mistake'.

Like millions of immigrant families that came before her, Maryam Monsef probably faced significant resistance from her peers during her time in small town Ontario in the mid-1990s. She discusses her struggle to "fit in" with her accent, her "different clothes", and her "misunderstanding of the culture" in this April 2016 interview. The notion of integrating and assimilating into Canadian society by catering to the Anglo-Saxon dominant culture has always been a winning formula.

Along the way, Monsef's family name was truncated, from Monsefzadeh.

This is a tried and true tactic to placate "old stock Canadians" who can be cold to those with "ethnic-sounding" names.

The first Arab immigrant to Canada, Ibrahim Abu Nadir, became Abraham Bounadere in 1882. The Canadian co-creator of the Superman comic character, Joseph Shuster, was originally a Shusterowich. Poles, Italians, and East Europeans have a similar history of dodging native Canadians' prejudices by camouflaging their ethnicity. Przystawski became Preston, Zanetti became Zaneth, Simonović became Simon.

Schoenwald to Shinwell: "My Jewish grandmother's family name was originally Schoenwald, which was changed to Shinwell sometime in the late 19th Century."

Stephanie Blitz, Toronto, Canada

For over a century, immigrants have altered and anglicized their surnames to help lessen the burdens of nativism, ethnic bias, and name-based discrimination.

Some have gone further still to dissimulate their ethnic origins. Because of WWII and its negative effect on Germany's reputation, German-Canadians pretended to be Dutch, Scandinavian or Russian.

It isn't surprising that a Persian migrant to the West would avoid publicly associating themselves with a country that was part of the "axis of evil," in a post-9/11 era.

These days, immigrants resort to all sorts of artifices to gain employment survive. Women can shed their (ethnic-sounding) maiden name, and keep the new one post-divorce and, when convenient, post-remarriage(!). Many Asian immigrants adopt a Christian first name in an attempt to fit in. Latinos, who often have two last names, might choose to go by the least ethnic-sounding one. The pains immigrants and minorities go through to 'whitewash' their resumes can stave off, if temporarily, Canada's pernicious prejudice problem.

Conservative MP and leadership contender Tony Clement (born Anthony Payani) is has floated the idea of a criminal investigation regarding Minister Monsef's family.

It's particularly malevolent to vilify migrants who must strategize to dodge the bias bullet.

The problem Canada need to address isn't found within the pages of Maryam Monsef's 20-year-old refugee petition. The burden is on everyday Canadians who have tacitly accepted anti-ethnic prejudices. Migrants like Maryam are condemned navigate around Canadians' biases. These nocuous societal biases require a correction more so than Monsef's birth certificate.

2016-05-30-1464633699-9692097-air_canada_africa_map.jpgSource: compte Twitter d'AirCanada

Upside Down and Backwards: When International Aid Flows from Africa to the West #YMMfire

It's been a few weeks since thousands fled from the Canadian city of Fort McMurray to escape the raging wildfires. The news has died down but the big blaze rages on. It is not unusual for the U.S. to lend a hand in this type of exceptional natural disaster, as Canadians have been deployed state-side in similar occurrences. Outside of the bilateral relationship with its U.S. ally, foreign aid is not something Canadians are accustomed to.

That's why eyebrows were raised when a contingent of 300 African firefighters landed in Edmonton to lend a hand. Three hundred -- that's 100 more firefighters than the U.S. is sending Canada's way to battle the historic blaze.Currently, 2,267 firefighters are either already battling blazes across Alberta or are en route to do so. Over 300 of those firefighters are from out of province. Almost 500 hail from outside of Canada (298 firefighters from South Africa and 199 from the United States). They are being supported with the help of 95 helicopters, 263 pieces of heavy equipment and 24 air tankers. [source ]

According to Africa corresponded Geoffrey York , the P.R. line goes as follows: "South Africa is repaying a debt to the Canadian people for their support for the anti-apartheid struggle". It's an interesting rationale considering Canada's frosty relationship with Mandela's party , the ANC over the past decade.
The more plausible explanation is that the Fort McMurray aid initiative is a "strategy for changing the lives of unemployed South African youths. The jobless young men and women were recruited for a government-funded organization called Working on Fire". WOF has trained 5,000 firefighters to serve in 200 bases across South Africa.
This Canadian experience is quite the resume-builder for participants in the program. One can imagine a successful 8 week stint in Fort Mac, while pious and noble, is also a career springboard. Everybody wins!

South Africa Leads the Way
In a time of need, South Africa graciously sent help Canada's way. The aid isn't just in manpower, it is in a recalibration of social progress barometers for women and minorities. Westerners often look at Africa as upside down and backwards. Perhaps it is the West that is lagging behind. Working on Fire proves that the West still has a lot to learn from Africa.

South Africa helping Fort McMurray: A new chapter in diplomatic relations? #ymmfire

By the time Fort McMurray was evacuated this spring, Canada had suffered its worst wildfire in generations. Images of the small Canadian city engulfed in flames went viral, as frightened city residents fled for their lives. Despite boasting first rate infrastructure, first world resources and a multi-provincial firefighting brigade, the wildfire still burns out of control.

It is not surprising that Canadians responded with record donations to charity organizations purporting to help domestic refugees displaced persons. However, foreign aid is not something Canadians are accustomed to (aside from the bilateral natural disaster emergency collaborations with its U.S. neighbour and ally).

Russia immediately offered to help battle the inferno with its massive water bombers and fire fighting specialists. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau refused. On the other hand, South Africa's aid offer is seemingly welcomed. Some 300 Africans have reached Canada, received "refresher training" and are poised be deployed in the coming days.

--Denise Filiatrault

Mme Filiatrault a-t-elle la mémoire courte? Si oui, elle n'est pas la seule.

« JE ME SOUVIENS.... DE QUOI? DE RIEN! »

Stacey Dash's Little Black Lies: When Blacks Agree with Bigots

Alternate title : Stacey Dash -- Human Shield of House Negro ?

It’s painful to watch someone pimp themselves out for a paycheque. But Black people do it every day. Why? To “go along to get a long”, to make colleagues comfortable, to insure the few strands of opportunities that may come their way despite an unlevel playing field aren’t rubbed out.

This week, Stacey Dash traded her values for a check when she turned her back on the African-American owned media outlets which supported her career, and their audiences. The once still ‘Clueless’ actress-turned-Fox News commentator called for the elimination of Black History Month, the BET Awards and other venues to highlight talent which is otherwise eclipsed by the ubiquity of whiteness (see #OscarsSoWhite controversy 1.0 and 2.0). Too many bigots–blissfully unaware of the trick compensated ruse–salivate on Dash’s diatribe, wielding it like a weapon to uphold white supremacy.

The ruse has been employed for decades, and not just in the U.S. Banking on vulnerable people to lie to save their skin is one thing. To use these misguided statements, possibly offered under duress, as a catalyst for further marginalization of racialized groups is cruel. This tactic has often worked well for the establishment.

In the mid-1950s, Dresden, Ont. was like many segregated Canadian towns. Black and white residents led separate social lives. Restaurants, barbershops and even churches banned African Canadians from entering. Many merchants refused to serve people of colour.

When Black residents challenged the long-standing segregationist climate in a Dresden court room, the media descended on the south-western Ontario town to survey the racial row. To gage the sentiment of the townsfolk, they interviewed local residents. Curiously, the black resident this journalist interrogated was the area’s token sole Black police officer. When asked about the race-based discrimination enforced by the City (and, implicitly, his employer), the smiling policeman stated “there was no discrimination here”.

Were (white) journalists enlightened enough to decipher the white lie a Black employee uttered to comfort his Caucasian coworkers and keep his coveted job? None of the period articles I found were conclusive. However, it is entirely plausible that local bigots used this coerced headline to justify the racist status quo.

The same sad scenario has repeated itself in Quebec this week. CBC TV producer and Quebecois celebrity Louis Morissette took to his wife’s magazine, the public broadcaster’s airwaves and La Presse newspaper to share his artistic sorrow: his bosses forbid him from using blackface during Radio-Canada’s annual New Years’ Eve TV comedy special. Even worse, Morissette was – gasp! – forced to hire a Black actor to play a Black character on TV.

Blackface, a longstanding practice by which a white actor tars his face to play a black character, is back in style in Quebec. (Some say it never went out of style.)

Two afro-quebeckers vehemently and publicly defend blackface in French-speaking Canada: African immigrant-turned-CBC comedian Boucar Diouf and perennial token-black-character Normand Brathwaite, who notably got his career started by playing to Haitian immigrant stereotypes -- much to the Québécois audience’s delight.

“This is not blackface,” Normand Brathwaite said. “I’d be pretty pissed off if someone imitated me in a year-end show and didn’t paint himself black, because I’m very proud of the colour of my skin.”

The Brathwaite-Diouf duo are often dragged to Quebec TV, radio and print to prop up bigot blackface-disciples, with a clear aim at silencing the vast majority of the black community which is offended by the practice. Brathwaite and Diouf work for the very Québec-based broadcasters and producers who repeatedly rely on blackface for comic relief. No one has questioned the dynamics by which Brathwaite and Diouf defend their masters remain in the good graces of Quebec’s white-dominated star système clique.

HUMAN SHIELDS or HOUSE NEGROS?
It’s a false binary. Journalists pull the strings of public sentiment by selecting biased spokespersons. The Stacy Dash’s of Quebec say what their employers want to hear. They’ve convinced many uninformed purelaine Quebeckers that blackface is no longer considered racist with their post-racial paradise. Regardless, the responsibility to present analysis of a racially-charged controversy isn’t on Stacy Dash or the Brathwaite-Diouf duo. It behooves competent journalists forgo editorial fools’ gold.

Pope Francis pontificates on 'new colonialism,' Africa still reeling from the old one

Thirty years ago Pope John Paul II chose Cameroon as the location to apologize to black Africa for the involvement of white Christians in the slave trade. This time, it is Pope Francis who uses Sub-Saharan Africa as a backdrop to speak out against colonialism.

This week in his inaugural trip to Africa, Pope Francis, criticized "new forms of colonialism" that exacerbate the "dreadful injustice of urban exclusion." The pontiff also condemned unjust distribution of land, poor housing, etc. "These realities ... are not a random combination of unrelated problems. They are a consequence of new forms of colonialism".

Colonialism and sub-Saharan Africa are intrinsically linked.

colonialism
The policy or practice of a wealthy or powerful nation's maintaining or extending its control over other countries, especially in establishing settlements or exploiting resources.

For centuries after Christopher Columbus 'discovered' India a new continent, European nations exercised brutal control genocide on the First Nations people of the Americas, all the while importing a workforce to exploit stolen lands. The justification for this inhumane institution lay within the Church's own ideology. Slavery was part of the Christian God's plan, colonizers contended.

It was said that both the Old and New Testament give permission to hold others as slaves. In the Old Testament, God and the Patriarchs approve. As for the New Testament, Jesus and the Apostles show that slavery is permissible. Therefore, slavery was not an anti-Christian institution. It was just the opposite. Furthermore, it is impious to say slavery is anti-Christian because such a conclusion contradicted God. [source]
Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis' statements are a testament to the immeasurable and enduring damage that colonialism and transatlantic slavery had on Africa. But Pope Francis' covert finger-wagging to African leaders for their role in what the pontiff called 'new colonialism' seems like an apt distraction from the 'old colonialism' the Church has yet to answer for.

In truth, the peculiar institutions informed European settlements on both sides of the pond: Africa and the Americas. In the name of their European monarchs and with the blessing of the Church, colonizers pillaged human resources from Africa for 315 years. Over 12 million black bodies were transported to the New World. Millions died on the way. Upon arrival, enslaved Africans built the colonies from scratch. The first buildings Europeans erected were churches, of course. Most slave-holders were Christians, and some were even members of the clergy. Even Christian missionaries to the colonies owned slaves. The profitable slave trade filled the Church's coffers. The gold-laden Vatican itself is a repository for the spoils of slavery and colonialism. As a number of American churches and Christian colleges such as Georgetown and Princeton confront their historical and financial ties to the slavery, the Pope's head remains firmly planted in the sand.

Pope Francis, like his predecessors on visits to the New World, made no mention of the racially-based evils which begat colonialism. Slave-decedents still congregate at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale in most of the Americas, alongside survivors of Indigenous genocide. These realities are not a random combination of unrelated problems. They are a consequence of 'old colonialism'. The legitimate grievances of slave-decedents provide nothing more than road kill for the Pope-mobile.

Meanwhile in Africa, Europeans graduated from kidnapping humans to plundering physical resources after slavery was abolished. European powers and the USA gathered in Berlin in 1884 to slice up African land (and its precious commodities) among themselves. By creating unnatural borders, Europeans split African tribes families apart and fueled animosity among opposing tribes. Today, with Europe's grip loosening, China has moved in as chief 'foreign investor' in Africa. Millions of dollars in profits at stake, and none of it, it seems, trickles down to the slums of Nairobi where Pope Francis made his anti-colonialism allocution.

The Church of Rome conceded that the African slave was a human being in 1839. Then-Pope Gregory XVI did not mince words. Almost two hundred years and millions of deaths later, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, a white man, descends on colonized African nations to lecture on 'new colonialism'. Africans and Afro-descendants are still reeling from the 'old colonialism'. A number of Christian churches are discussing reparations. Before Pope Francis can implore Africans to addressing unfair distribution of land and resources, the Vatican must rediscover the righteousness of Christ's teachings and answer for the consequences of its own colonial sins.

The Panda PM and the Pandering Patrician #elxn42

pa·tri·cian

n.

1. A person of refined upbringing.

2. A member of an aristocracy; an aristocrat.

PM Stephen Harper got a jump-start on his electoral promise to increase the country's panda population. Canada added not one but two pandas to its cubs-in-captivity collection this week.

"Canadians will have the opportunity for even more panda sightings in both Toronto and Calgary."
- Prime Minister Harper, September 2015.

No other PM in Canadian history has paid so much attention to these mammals. In 2013, PM Harper hinted at his political prioritization pyramid when he opted to pose with a pair of pandas instead of meeting Aboriginal youth leaders. The Nishiyuu Journey from Northern Quebec to Ottawa was started by teenager David Kawapit Jr. and six other Whapmagoostui residents. By the end of their 1,600 km trek to Parliament Hill, the group had grown to 270. The prime-ministerial snub was summarized by Vice News as: "Stephen Harper Likes Pandas More than Idle No More".

In general, the electorate can decipher a party leader's priorities by observing their conspicuous conduct and strategic silences more so than their words. Actions matter the most. Silences speak volumes. And talk is cheap.
Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau showed his true colours when he honoured a commitment to Vancouver's Gay Pride Parade over the all-important first electoral news cycle. When the writ dropped in August, Trudeau was noticeably absent from the airwaves -- on a cross-country flight to attend the celebration of British Columbia's LGBT community.

"I made a promise to the half a million British Columbians who will be celebrating Pride this afternoon, celebrating Canada's diversity." Trudeau explained.

One month after the writ drop, Trudeau gave lip service to Syrian refugees by suggesting Canada accept 25,000 of them 'immediately'. Weeks later, Trudeau upped the ante: he said he'd consider airlifting Syrian refugees to fulfill his promise by January 2016. Trudeau later qualified Canada's current refugee policy as "disgusting".

By mid-campaign, both the Liberals and Tom Mulcair's NDP argued against placing a ban on the niqab at citizenship ceremonies. Mr. Mulcair argued that the choice to wear this religious garb -- a veil which covers the whole face, save the eyes - belongs to the individual. Trudeau, too, defended the pair of Muslim women who sought to keep themselves covered at the moment they ascend to Canadian citizenship. What better way to project adherence to women's issues than to defend a woman's right to choose? The absence of women's chief grievances from the general discourse might be more telling.

Last Spring, the Conservative government made changes to the Citizenship Act, which included expanding the grounds for the revocation of citizenship. Naturally, the legislation applies to convicted terrorists, such as the Toronto 18. (They plotted to bomb downtown Toronto). During the electoral writ, several convicted criminals received federal notice that their citizenship would be revoked. In an atypical case, a Canadian-born convict could also lose his citizenship.

Mr. Trudeau jumped to the convicted terrorists' defense when they were threatened with deportation.
"[...] The Liberal Party believes that terrorists should get to keep their Canadian citizenship," Trudeau said. "Because I do. And I'm willing to take on anyone who disagrees with that."

Trudeau and his fans liberal supporters love to brandish the Charter of Rights and Freedoms when they mine minority voting blocs defend Canadian values. To Liberals, the Charter is a fetish point of reference for upholding LGBT Rainbow Rights, protecting religious prerogatives or defending convicted criminals.

All the grandstanding about minority rights fades to radio silence for one demographic: Justin Trudeau defended the Charter rights of convicted terrorists ahead of innocent Afro-Canadians.

Trudeau's Liberals recruited the champion of carding, former Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, to represent the party in Scarborough, ON. The controversial police practice of 'randomly' stopping dark-skinned citizens who are not crime suspects has come under scrutiny in around the country. First Nations leaders have also decried the racist practice. Trudeau's tacit endorsement of this Charter violation flies in the face of the 'Just Society' his famous father stood for. In the dying days of the electoral campaign, some erudite liberal-minded leaders have read Trudeau's deafening silence as a betrayal.

Much has been said of 'weapons of mass distraction' this election cycle. The 'Panda PM' may have brought forth an array of red herrings to discourage undesired discourse, but there isn't a niqab large enough to conceal the Liberal Party's indifference towards the lives of those most vulnerable to civil rights abuses.

Harvesting Fear of Foreigners: A Winning Conservative Tactic... in 1911

Autumn is upon us. Election Day is fast approaching. Canadians are asked to weigh the most important issues of the day when choosing their Prime Minister. Apparently, it's a race between the Liberals and the Conservatives. The Conservatives win the election on the strength of their xenophobic indulgences betrayed by a telling slogan: "A White Canada."

That was fall 1911.

The party leader's name was Robert Borden.

He became PM on October 10th, 1911.

The 1911 federal election campaign played on voters' phobias and patriotism. Robert Borden's Conservatives were happy to harvest fear of foreigners on the road to electoral victory.

Voters viewed trepidation the proposed free trade deal with outsiders - those below the 49th parallel.

The Canadian-British Association lobby group formed in Toronto and spread its malicious message of anti-Americanism across Ontario in the months preceding the election. Arthur Hawkes was in charge of the special appeal to British-born Canadians, 250,000 of whom had immigrated to Canada in the 3 years leading up to the election. Hawkes' final appeal before voting day appealed to voters' identity and xenophobic tendencies: "It is the high privilege of the British born in Canada to unite with the Canadian born, at the most important general election in Canadian history, to defeat the object of a foreign government."

Moreover, Conservative leaders declared that a "reciprocity" (free trade) deal with the imperialist-leaning Americans would cause massive job losses. The unsubstantiated claim drew nervous factory workers to Conservative ranks.

Conservatives campaigned on the oft-repeated quip: "No truck nor trade with the Yankees," though there is no record of Borden having voiced that phrased. Borden's conservative associates produced thousands of pamphlets to fan the flames of anti-Americanism as it swept across English Canada.

Anti-Asian sentiment in British Columbia
During Borden's decade in opposition, PM Wilfrid Laurier's Liberals had successfully stemmed the flow of immigrants from Asia, India and other 'undesirable' pilgrims who were not white.

source of 1914 political cartoon is www.komagatamaru100.com/blog/

Much to Vancouverites' dismay, Asian immigrants kept coming despite the Chinese Head Tax designed to discourage newcomers. The Asiatic Exclusion League lobbied "to keep Oriental immigrants out of British Columbia." This sentiment spanned the province. The Vancouver Trades and Labour Council brought its grievances to PM Wilfred Laurier a year before the 1910 election: "White supremacy" was in jeopardy, they contended, if existing Asians were permitted to enter almost every trade." The Victoria Times: "The Anglo-Saxon nations on the Pacific coast regard the Yellow Peril as the serious and paticular menace.... This attitude is prompted by the instinct of self-preservation..." BC Premier Richard McBride echoed these sentiments in 1909: "We stand for a white British Columbia, a white land and a white Empire".

Robert Borden pandered to these Sinophobe constituents with this connotative catchphrase: "A White Canada." - a political dog whistle of yesteryear.

Luckily, these gutter tactics no longer entice the majority of electors... most of the time. The general recoil associated with racist pamphlets, xenophobic pandering and dog whistles are a testament to the progress Old Stock Canadians have made in 100 years.

Off With Their Heads! Deporting Home-Grown Degenerates and Killers

In the bowels of all grand societies inevitably lie the residuals of human scum. Those people who choose to destroy rather than build, to hate rather than tolerate, to terrorize rather than assuage and uplift. When poisonous behaviour intersects with law enforcement, the toxic mixture often results in general condemnation by the general public.

Civilizations have, for centuries, cast away degenerates and social deviants to prisons (after a prescribed judicial process).

When gun violence errupted in Canada’s largest city in 2012, then-Immigration Minister Jason Kenney pounced on the tragedy to justify the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act. Surely Canadians would agree to wash our nation of these undesirables. "Foreign gangsters should be deported w/out delay," Kenney tweeted.

In Spring 2015, substantial changes to the Citizenship Act, which expanded the grounds for which a Canadian citizenship can be revoked, came into effect. As such, Canadians convicted of trying to join terrorist groups, attempted murder and other egregious crimes are subject to “double punishment”: the government resolved to displume them of their citizenship in addition to their prescribed lengthy prison sentences.

Like the umbrage after the PM uttered the words “old stock Canadians” at  a federal debate, ostensibly to differentiate white Canadians from immigrants and visible minorities, the uneven application of judicial punishment raises concerns.

These Canadians stand to be deported due to their crimes:
  • Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, convicted in an Ottawa terror plot and sentenced to 24 years in prison.
  • Mohamed Hersi was convicted of trying to join the Somali militant group al-Shabaab and received a 10-year sentence.
  • Zakaria Amara was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole until 2016 after admitting his role in the terror plot
  • Saad Gaya is serving an 18-year sentence for his role in the Toronto 18 bomb plot.
Meanwhile, these killers remain in Canadian soil:
  • Pig farmer Robert Pickton (who confessed to 49 murders): life sentence.
  • Col. Russell Williams (double-murderer and rapist): life sentence
  • Paul Bernardo (serial rapist and triple murderer) shocked Canadians nationwide: Life imprisonment with a possibility of parole after 25 years.
If home-grown criminals can be deported, should Canada extend the dishonour to old stock Canadians?
Foreign-born Colonel Russell Williams comes from Bromsgrove, England. He terrorized dozens of women. Paul Bernardo, whose long-undetected crime spree is traumatizing in itself, had an Italian grandfather. Robert Pickton can trace his family farm back several generations, but since he is not Aboriginal, one can assume he descends from the UK.

Have the gradients of Canadian-ness been established or are will the law be applied equally regardless of race? Asking for a friend.
